Fresh coconut flesh stays low-FODMAP up to about 81g (3/4 cup), per Monash-derived data reported by FODMAP Everyday, before crossing into moderate-FODMAP territory (from sorbitol) around 96g (1 cup).
Note: other secondary sources citing the same Monash data give different gram thresholds — figures of 48g and 64g both show up elsewhere.

Botanically, no — coconut is a fruit, specifically a drupe, not a tree nut. The FDA's 2025 fifth-edition Food Allergen Q&A guidance actually removed coconut from its official 'Tree Nut List' of major allergens.
That means coconut no longer needs a 'Contains: tree nuts (coconut)' statement on labels, though it must still show up in the ingredient list. Cross-reactive allergenic proteins have still been documented between coconut and several tree nuts, especially macadamia.
People with a tree-nut allergy are considered at somewhat elevated risk of also reacting to coconut. Allergists recommend testing for coconut specifically rather than assuming safety, or risk, based on other nut allergies alone. [5]
Coconut meat is calorie-dense and high in saturated fat, so overeating it without adjusting the rest of your diet can contribute to weight gain. Some researchers link high saturated fat intake generally to greater cardiovascular risk, though that specific risk from whole coconut meat at ordinary intakes is still debated.
A genuine coconut allergy is a separate, more serious concern. In one pediatric study, about half of reported coconut reactions met the criteria for anaphylaxis. [6]
The evidence is mixed, and it matters what form of coconut was actually tested. Several small trials found coconut oil, or foods containing coconut milk, raised HDL ('good') cholesterol.
One trial also lowered LDL ('bad') cholesterol compared with a soy-milk control.
Those trials used concentrated coconut oil or milk, though, not whole coconut meat. Separately, a large observational study linked high saturated fat intake generally to increased heart disease risk, a category that roughly 89% of coconut meat's fat falls into.
Whether typical amounts of whole coconut meat meaningfully move overall cardiovascular risk in either direction isn't settled. [7]
Yes, coconut can generally be introduced around 6 months, once a baby is ready for solids, but texture matters more here than allergy risk. Pediatric feeding guidance recommends starting with finely shredded dried coconut mixed into soft foods, or coconut milk, cream, or oil stirred into purees and cereals.
Large coconut flakes or hard pieces of mature raw coconut should be avoided, since they're firm and can be a choking hazard. Soft young coconut flesh, cut into small pinky-finger-sized strips, can be offered from about 9 months once it mashes easily under gentle pressure.
Coconut allergy itself is rare, though reactions when they occur have been associated with severe symptoms.
