Authorised EU-wide as E422 with no numerical ADI. EFSA's 2022 follow-up re-evaluation recommended tightening the EU specification so that food-grade glycerol is obtained only from vegetable oils/fats via a defined purification process, to control genotoxic/carcinogenic contaminant residues — a sourcing-related recommendation, not a change to allowed/restricted status.
