Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin humans cannot make and must take in from food [1].
It is a cofactor for prolyl and lysyl hydroxylase, the enzymes that build collagen. That is why a shortfall shows up first in connective tissue — gums, skin, blood vessels [1].
The body regulates it tightly. Absorption drops as the dose climbs, and the excess leaves in urine rather than being stored [1].

Vitamin C's antioxidant activity could in theory shield tumour cells from the oxidative damage those therapies rely on [1].

The sources genuinely conflict, and this page is not settling it.
A Swedish cohort of about 23,000 men followed 11 years found supplement users had roughly double the kidney stone risk of non-users [6]. A Harvard-cited Curhan study found the same.
The signal sat at around 1,000 mg/day or more, in men specifically. Dietary vitamin C and general multivitamin use showed no such effect, and a near-identical study in women found no association [6].
NIH ODS calls the overall vitamin C and oxalate evidence conflicting, and limits the best causal case to people who already have hyperoxaluria [1].

- Warfarin
Case reports describe high-dose vitamin C reducing warfarin's anticoagulant effect [14].
The doses involved were roughly 1,000 mg/day and up, reaching about 16,000 mg/day in one case [14].

Vitamin C substantially increases absorption of non-heme, plant-based iron by reducing ferric iron to the more absorbable ferrous form [1].

Vitamin C, alongside other antioxidants, may blunt the HDL-cholesterol-raising effect of combined niacin and simvastatin therapy [1].

Best Time to Take
Cleveland Clinic's guidance is to take water-soluble vitamins like C on an empty stomach with a glass of water, since water is needed to absorb them [10].
That is about pairing with water, not about a particular hour [10].
The dose-response is where timing actually bites. NIH pharmacokinetic data show 70–90% absorption at moderate intakes of 30–180 mg/day [1].
Above 1 g/day absorption falls below 50%, with the surplus excreted in urine [1]. That is the physiological argument some sources make for splitting large doses across the day.
NIH's own fact sheet does not recommend dose-splitting as general practice [1].
Topical serum is a different route with different advice. Healthline's dermatologist sources suggest applying morning and night on freshly washed skin, before moisturiser and sunscreen, with reapplication roughly every 8 hours [11].

Is vitamin C safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
The requirement goes up, not down — 85 mg/day in pregnancy and 120 mg/day during lactation [1].
Large supplemental doses are a different question. MedlinePlus cautions against them in pregnancy [2].
The stated reason is that the baby can have a temporary vitamin C shortage after delivery. The infant adjusts to a high maternal supply, which then stops abruptly at birth [2].
Does cooking destroy vitamin C in vegetables?
Yes, more than most nutrients. Vitamin C is water-soluble and heat-sensitive, so prolonged storage and cooking both cut a food's content [1].
Boiling is the worst offender, since the vitamin leaches into water you then pour away [1].
Steaming and microwaving cause less loss. Eating vitamin-C-rich produce raw keeps the most [1].
How should vitamin C serum be stored, if you don't have a fridge?

The enemies of stability are light, heat and air [12].
That matters most for pure L-ascorbic acid formulas, which oxidise — turning yellow, then darker — and lose potency on exposure [12].
Vitamin C serum or niacinamide — can you use both?
Yes. The idea that they cancel each other out came from lab experiments combining pure ascorbic acid and niacinamide at high heat, which is nothing like how they sit on skin [12].
Vitamin C is mainly an antioxidant supporting collagen production and brightening, and it can irritate sensitive skin [12].
Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, mainly improves skin barrier hydration and is generally gentler [12].
A dermatologist's rule of thumb: apply whichever has the thinner texture first, both before moisturiser and sunscreen [12].
