Shao and Hathcock's 2008 toxicological risk assessment put the tolerable upper level near 3 g/day, with gastrointestinal upset the only adverse effect at that dose [2].
EFSA's 2012 opinion is more permissive, judging up to 6 g/day safe for an adult [1]. Secondary sources quote both benchmarks without reconciling the two-fold gap.
Trials have gone well past either figure — up to 10 g/day for 6 months [6]. The longest human trial, at 12 months, used a much lower 0.5–1.5 g/day [6].

Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino sulfonic acid, formally 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid, first isolated from ox bile in 1827 [2].
It concentrates in the brain, heart, retina and skeletal muscle, and is classed as conditionally essential [2]. The body makes some of its own from cysteine; food supplies the rest [2].
Unlike most amino acids it is never built into structural proteins, so supplements sell it as free taurine rather than inside a peptide [6].
There is no Dietary Reference Intake for taurine, and no standardized clinical definition of a human taurine deficiency [2]. Commercial taurine, in capsules and in energy drinks alike, is made synthetically [9].
What the Evidence Actually Supports
- Blood pressureLikely helps
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in prehypertensive adults used 1.6 g/day for 12 weeks [7].
Clinic systolic pressure fell 7.2 mmHg against 2.6 mmHg on placebo; diastolic fell 4.7 mmHg against 1.3 mmHg [7].
A 2018 meta-analysis, quoted in the 2023 Nutrients review, concluded taurine lowers blood pressure to a clinically relevant magnitude without major adverse effects [2].

An 8-week randomized trial gave adults with type 2 diabetes 1 g three times daily, so 3 g/day [8].

Human studies summarized in the 2023 Nutrients review report improved left ventricular function and exercise tolerance in heart-failure patients [2].

The largest synthesis is a 2025 meta-analysis of 23 randomized trials, 69 comparisons and 308 participants [19].
A single acute dose produced a small-to-moderate pooled effect on overall performance — Hedges' g = 0.25 (95% CI 0.10–0.39) [19].
Gains clustered in aerobic endurance, strength and power, and agility. Anaerobic capacity and muscular endurance stayed inconsistent [19].
No dose-response relationship showed up across the commonly used 1–6 g range, which is awkward for anyone trying to pick a number [19].
The sources disagree on emphasis. An earlier narrative review of 19 studies described benefits in oxygen uptake, time to fatigue, muscle damage and recovery [5].

A randomized, placebo-controlled crossover trial tested 2 g/day of oral taurine in people with chronic liver disease [18].
Against placebo: seven fewer cramps per fortnight, 89 fewer minutes of cramping per fortnight, and 1.4 points lower on a severity scale, with no adverse effects reported [18].

Cleveland Clinic puts supplementation mainly in one narrow place: people who are critically ill and need extra immune support [9].
For everyone else it says a protein- and amino-acid-rich diet already covers the requirement [9].
The eye-health, hearing, neuroprotection and liver claims rest on animal and test-tube research rather than robust human trials [9][5]. [9]
Signs of Low Levels
- No standardized clinical taurine-deficiency syndrome exists in humans, and there is no DRI to fall short of [2]
- Retinal degeneration and dilated cardiomyopathy, in people carrying mutations in the taurine transporter gene SLC6A6 (TauT)
- Preterm infants lack some of the enzymes for making taurine from cysteine, so they depend on breast milk or taurine-added formula
- People on long-term intravenous (parenteral) nutrition with no taurine added to the bag
- Long-term vegans and vegetarians measure lower plasma taurine than omnivores, with no confirmed clinical deficiency state established in that group
- Dialysis patients run low for a different reason — 34 µmol/L on hemodialysis and 47 µmol/L on CAPD, against 66 µmol/L in controls, reflecting altered handling rather than dietary shortfall
- Retinal degeneration, cardiac remodeling and impaired glucose handling come from animal models, including taurine-deficiency cardiomyopathy in dogs on certain commercial diets[2]

Side Effects

Reported at higher intakes: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, tremor and headache [2].
Gastrointestinal upset was the only adverse effect noted at the 3 g/day benchmark dose [2].
A few case reports also mention liver pain [5]. [2]
Precautions
- Renal failure — probably a contraindication
Taurine is normally cleared by the kidneys, so failing kidneys let it pile up [3].
A small hemodialysis trial at 100 mg/kg/day — roughly seven cans' worth of a taurine-containing energy drink — drove plasma and muscle taurine to extreme levels [3].
Two of four evaluable patients stopped early with dizziness and non-rotatory vertigo. Symptoms resolved within 24 hours of discontinuation [3].
A cardiovascular physiology commentary in Hypertension states plainly that renal failure is probably a contraindication for taurine supplements [4]. [3] - Pregnancy, breastfeeding, bipolar disorder, epilepsy
The same 2023 review names pregnant and lactating women, and people with bipolar disorder, epilepsy or kidney problems, as groups who should ask a clinician first [2].
That is a caution built on absent data rather than on a documented harm signal [2]. [2]
Interactions
- Blood-pressure and other cardiovascular drugs
The 2023 Nutrients review flags stacking taurine on top of medication doing the same job, blood-pressure-lowering drugs in particular [2].
It extends the same caution to calcium-channel blockers, renin-angiotensin-system drugs, and anything acting on heart or central nervous system function [2]. [2] - Antiplatelet and blood-thinning drugs
Taurine trials sometimes exclude people with a significant clinical bleeding disorder, or those on dual antiplatelet therapy [20].
The reason is mild antiplatelet activity seen in vitro in at least one study — a theoretical caution, not a risk established in controlled human trials [20]. [20] - The cytochrome P450 claim does not check out
Healthline states that taurine acts as a cytochrome P450 inhibitor, implying interference with antidepressants, antiepileptics, warfarin and statins [5].
The paper it cites for that is a general review of CYP450 mechanism-based inhibition that never mentions taurine anywhere [5].
So the claim is unverified rather than established. It stays visible here because the warning circulates widely, and a reader deserves to know what is behind it. [5]
Food Sources
Taurine is an animal-food nutrient almost exclusively. Meat, poultry, fish, shellfish and dairy carry it; plant foods carry essentially none, seaweed excepted [12][11].
Per 100 g, from the food table in the 2023 Nutrients review [2]: dried nori (Pyropia tenera) 979 mg, raw scallops 827 mg, raw mussels 655 mg.
Still high: dried Porphyra haitanensis seaweed 646 mg, raw clams 520 mg, raw oysters 507 mg, raw octopus 388 mg, raw squid 356 mg [2].
Poultry and fish sit mid-table — raw dark turkey meat 306 mg, raw dark chicken meat 169 mg, raw white fish 151 mg [2].
Land meat drops sharply: raw pork 61 mg, salami 59 mg, baked ham 50 mg, raw dark lamb 47 mg, raw beef 43 mg, canned tuna 42 mg, raw shrimp 39 mg [2].
Dairy and eggs are near the floor — goat's milk 6.8 mg, egg yolk 3.7 mg, yogurt 3.3 mg, cow's milk 2.4 mg, ice cream 1.9 mg [2].
A 2020 review in Amino Acids estimates that about 30 g of dry beef covers a healthy 70 kg adult's daily taurine and carnosine needs [12].
Diet pattern moves intake a long way. Healthline puts a typical American omnivore at 123–178 mg/day, against roughly 17 mg/day on a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet [5].
The vegan numbers disagree between sources. A vegan-nutrition reference reports directly measured intakes of 76 mg/day in omnivore men and none detected in vegan men [11].
Both sources agree on the direction, not the figure — read the exact milligrams as method-dependent [5][11].
Energy drinks are a genuine dietary source too, typically 750–1,000 mg per 240 mL can [2].
Best Time to Take
Timing evidence exists for exercise and essentially nowhere else.
A narrative review of 19 studies points to 1–3 g taken 1–3 hours before exercise, kept up for at least 6–21 days [5]. Examine's summary is blunter: roughly 60 minutes beforehand [6].
For general health use, no human trial has compared morning with evening dosing [2].
The bedtime idea rests on taurine activating GABA(A) receptors, a mechanism it shares with some calming compounds [16].
The only controlled sleep experiment located was in fruit flies, where a 0.75% taurine dose raised total sleep about 50% while caffeine lowered it [16].
Drosophila is not a person. Read that as a mechanism, not as a dosing schedule.
Common Questions
Is the taurine in energy drinks the same molecule as the supplement?
Yes — chemically identical, and both are made synthetically rather than extracted from animal tissue [9].
A typical 240 mL (8 oz) can carries about 750–1,000 mg, inside the range used in supplement trials [2].
Mayo Clinic's position is that taurine is usually not the ingredient to worry about in an energy drink [14]. The caffeine, sugar and other additives are what drive dehydration, sleep problems and nervousness [14].
Is taurine made from bull semen?
No. The myth comes from the name — taurine was first isolated from ox bile in 1827, and Bos taurus is Latin for ox [5].
Commercial taurine today is synthesized industrially. No bull semen, urine or other bull-derived tissue is involved [9].
Is taurine vegan?
The supplement almost always is. Taurine for capsules and energy drinks is manufactured synthetically, not extracted from animals [9].
Dietary taurine is a different matter — it occurs almost exclusively in meat, seafood and dairy [12].
Among plants, only a few seaweeds such as certain nori and Pyropia species carry meaningful amounts [12].
Does taurine cause weight gain or water retention?
No evidence supports fat gain or fluid retention from taurine [17].
A meta-analysis of human trials found supplementation associated with modest weight reduction in overweight adults, and no significant BMI effect in obese adults overall [17].
Long-term low-dose animal work has shown a small weight increase, attributed to added muscle mass rather than water [17].
How long does a taurine supplement keep?
Sealed, cool, dry and out of direct sunlight — the standard amino-acid storage rules apply [15].
Stability data recorded in PubChem shows taurine in sealed polyethylene bags holding potency for about 36 months at 25°C [15].
That is a rough guide for a well-stored product, not a label claim for any particular bottle.
