Vitamin B5's other name, pantothenic acid, comes from the Greek pantos — 'from everywhere' — because it turns up in nearly every plant and animal food [3].

Its job is building coenzyme A and acyl carrier protein, which fatty acid synthesis and breakdown both run on [1].

It is water-soluble, so the body keeps no real reserve. Surplus leaves in urine within about a day [12].

There is no RDA for it. The Food and Nutrition Board set an Adequate Intake instead, because the data weren't sufficient to establish an Estimated Average Requirement [1].

    Later placebo-controlled trials at 600-900 mg/day for up to 16 weeks confirmed smaller but still significant drops in total and LDL cholesterol. [1]

  • High-dose biotin alongside B5 — one serious case report

    A published case report describes a 76-year-old woman who developed life-threatening eosinophilic pleuropericardial effusion [11].

    She had taken biotin at 10 mg/day plus pantothenic acid at 300 mg/day for two months. Symptoms resolved after she stopped both vitamins [5].

    This is one isolated report, not a pattern from controlled trials. Causality and how far it generalizes are both uncertain. [11]

  • Biotin absorption at large B5 doses

    At large doses, pantothenic acid can compete with biotin for absorption [5].

Shiitake mushrooms, cooked, ½ cup — 2.6 mg (52% DV)

Sunflower seeds, ¼ cup — 2.4 mg (48% DV)

Chicken breast, roasted and skinless, 3 oz — 1.3 mg (26% DV)

Bluefin tuna, cooked, 3 oz — 1.2 mg (24% DV)

Avocado, half a fruit — 1.0 mg (20% DV)

Moderate contributors at 10-18% DV: 2% milk, white mushrooms, baked potato, hard-boiled egg, vanilla Greek yogurt and 85% lean ground beef.

Smaller ones at 2-10% DV: peanuts, broccoli, whole-wheat pita, chickpeas, brown rice, oats, cheddar, carrots, cabbage, clementine and tomatoes.

Two things cut into all that. Processing and cooking losses run from about 20% to nearly 80% depending on method, and the body absorbs only an estimated 40-61% of dietary pantothenic acid [1].

Best Time to Take

No clinical research on timing exists for pantothenic acid specifically. What follows is general B-vitamin consumer guidance rather than trial evidence [12].

Morning is the consistent recommendation from Cleveland Clinic and EatingWell, since B vitamins feed energy metabolism and some people find them mildly stimulating at night [13].

Here the sources split. Cleveland Clinic advises taking water-soluble vitamins on an empty stomach with a glass of water, while EatingWell suggests taking B-complex with food to head off nausea [13].

Neither position is specific to B5, so go with whichever your stomach tolerates.

Consistency matters more than the hour. B vitamins aren't stored long-term, and the excess leaves in urine within about a day [12].

Common Questions

Is vitamin B5 deficiency common?

No — genuinely isolated deficiency is very rare, because the vitamin is in nearly every food [1].

It has only been documented in extremes. World War II prisoners of war on near-starvation diets, and mid-century volunteer studies that induced it deliberately using a purified B5-free diet plus a metabolic antagonist [3].

So the symptom list on this page describes a rare state, not something an ordinary diet drifts into.

Is it safe to take a B5 supplement while pregnant?

The recommended intake goes up in pregnancy rather than down — 6 mg/day against 5 mg/day for other adults [1].

Is the panthenol in my moisturizer the same as taking vitamin B5?

Panthenol — specifically its active D-isomer, dexpanthenol — is a stable alcohol analogue that converts to pantothenic acid once absorbed [5].

It is used almost entirely in topical products because it penetrates skin well. The oral supplement forms are pantothenic acid and calcium pantothenate [1].
