Omega-7 is the retail name for palmitoleic acid, a monounsaturated fat whose double bond sits seven carbons in from the tail of the chain.
It is non-essential: the body builds its own from palmitic acid using the enzyme stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 [3].
That separates it from omega-3 and omega-6, which the body cannot synthesize at all [1].
Supplements arrive from wildly different raw materials — sea buckthorn berry oil, macadamia oil, avocado oil, algal oil, and fish-oil ethyl-ester concentrates [7]. Skin hydration rose and transepidermal water loss fell versus placebo. Elasticity, surface roughness and wrinkle severity did not shift significantly.

A 12-week trial gave adults with elevated hs-CRP 500 or 1,000 mg/day of marine-derived palmitoleic acid [3].
Nothing moved. LDL, total cholesterol, HDL, triglycerides, hs-CRP, IL-6 and TNF-alpha were all unchanged versus placebo.

Side Effects
- Mild digestive upset at 500 mg/day
In the 12-week, 90-person trial, mild dyspepsia turned up in 2 of 45 people on 500 mg/day palmitoleic acid, against 1 of 45 on placebo [2].
Every adverse event was mild and resolved without intervention. There were no serious adverse events and nobody dropped out. [2]
Precautions
- The two kinds of omega-7 product don't share a safety record
The sources pull in different directions here, and we are leaving that open rather than averaging it.
The rigorous safety data for purified palmitoleic acid shows a low, mild GI rate and no bleeding signal [2]. The bleeding caution is documented for whole sea buckthorn oil, a much less purified product [12].
Don't assume one product's record covers the other. [2] - Pregnancy and breastfeeding
No clinical safety study of omega-7 supplements in pregnancy or breastfeeding turned up in this research pass.
For sea buckthorn specifically, RxList states there isn't enough reliable information and advises avoiding it while pregnant or breastfeeding [14]. [14] - Allergen risk follows the source material
Nothing about the palmitoleic acid molecule itself is allergenic. The risk rides entirely on where the oil came from [15].
Macadamia-derived products carry tree-nut allergy risk, including documented cross-reactivity between macadamia and hazelnut allergens. Fish-derived products carry ordinary fish-allergy risk. [15]
Interactions
- Anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs — sea buckthorn products
This applies to sea buckthorn-derived omega-7, not to purified palmitoleic acid. A human study found 5 g/day of sea buckthorn oil for one month reduced ADP-induced platelet aggregation in 12 healthy men, with no change to plasma lipids or glucose [12].
Consumer drug references WebMD and RxList rate sea buckthorn's interaction with anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs as moderate, citing bruising and bleeding risk [13].
Both advise stopping at least two weeks before scheduled surgery. [12] - Blood-pressure medication
The same consumer drug references flag sea buckthorn alongside antihypertensive drugs, on the grounds of additive blood-pressure lowering [13].
This is a moderate-rated theoretical caution, not a documented case series. It attaches to sea buckthorn oil, not to purified palmitoleic acid. [13]
Food Sources
Palmitoleic acid is scarce in the plant kingdom — only a handful of foods carry it in meaningful amounts.
Macadamia nuts lead the plant sources at about 18.1% of total fatty acids, measured in a composition study of nuts sold in Korea [9]. Sea buckthorn berry pulp and peel oil runs roughly 26-35.5%, while seed oil from the same berry sits under 0.5% [8].
Avocado oil is lower again, around 5.6-10.0% in a commercial-product comparison [7].
On the animal side, sardine oil is roughly 15% palmitoleic acid by triglyceride fatty acid content [10]. Palmitoleic acid also makes up about 7% of Alaskan pollock's visceral fatty acids [2].
Salmon, cod, dairy fat and human breast milk are named sources too [10].
One discrepancy stays open: sea buckthorn pulp-oil figures range from 26-35.5% in a peer-reviewed table to about 43% elsewhere [8]. That spread reflects real variation by subspecies, origin and harvest time rather than a single fixed number.
Best Time to Take
Nothing in the reviewed research sets a best time of day, or says whether to take omega-7 with food [1].
That is part of a larger gap — no official dosing regimen exists for this supplement at all.
Brands commonly apply the general oil-supplement habit of taking it alongside a fat-containing meal. That has never been tested for palmitoleic acid, so read it as a plausible extrapolation rather than a finding.
Common Questions
How is omega-7 different from omega-3?
Essentiality is the real split. Omega-3s such as EPA and DHA have to come from the diet, while omega-7 does not, because the body builds palmitoleic acid from palmitic acid [1].
The evidence bases aren't comparable either. Omega-3's cardiovascular and neurological research runs decades deep; omega-7's metabolic and skin findings are still preliminary [3].
Is omega-7 the same as fish oil?
No. 'Fish oil' normally means an oil rich in the omega-3s EPA and DHA [7].
Omega-7 products usually come from sea buckthorn, macadamia, avocado or algal oil. Some are made from fish-oil ethyl-ester concentrates enriched in palmitoleic acid instead of EPA and DHA.
Palmitoleic acid does occur naturally in sardine, salmon, cod and Alaskan pollock alongside their omega-3s [10].
Should I buy purified palmitoleic acid or sea buckthorn oil?
On concentration and consistency, purified wins — algal oil and fish-oil ethyl esters carry far more per capsule than sea buckthorn, which swings from 0.2% to 35.5% [7].
On measured outcomes, neither looks impressive. The 2026 Frontiers in Nutrition review found purified palmitoleic acid largely neutral on cholesterol, glucose and inflammation up to about 1,512 mg/day [3].
The clearest human result in that same review came from whole macadamia nuts displacing saturated fat — a food, not a capsule.
Do I need omega-7 from food or supplements at all?
Strictly, no. Palmitoleic acid is non-essential — your body synthesizes it from palmitic acid, which is why no intake requirement exists [1].
If you want more from food anyway, macadamia nuts (about 18% of their fat) and sea buckthorn berry pulp oil (roughly 26-35.5%) are the richest sources identified [8].
