DMAA (1,3-Dimethylamylamine)Banned Substance

Before it was a pre-workout ingredient, DMAA was a nasal decongestant.
Eli Lilly introduced methylhexanamine in 1944 as an inhaler branded Forthane, and its New Drug Application was withdrawn in 1983 [4].
It came back in 2006 in a completely different aisle — reintroduced to the supplement market by chemist Patrick Arnold under the trademark Geranamine, shortly after ephedrine's ban [4].
Chemically it is an indirect sympathomimetic vasoconstrictor, similar to ephedrine and structurally related to amphetamine, thought to act mainly by triggering norepinephrine release [4].
The FDA declared DMAA-containing supplements illegal in April 2013, and the federal courts have since backed that position all the way up [1].
Why It's Banned
The FDA's core finding is definitional rather than toxicological. DMAA does not meet the statutory definition of a dietary ingredient, which makes any product containing it adulterated [1].
Synthetically produced DMAA in particular does not qualify as a dietary ingredient under federal law [1][2]. [1]Enforcement started with paperwork. On April 24, 2012 the FDA sent warning letters to ten supplement manufacturers and distributors [2].
The letters cited a failure to establish DMAA's safety, and a failure to register it as a New Dietary Ingredient [2].
By that month the agency had 42 adverse event reports tied to DMAA — narrowed blood vessels, raised blood pressure, shortness of breath, heart attack, and at least one associated death [2]. [2]In April 2013 the FDA went public and declared DMAA-containing supplements illegal [1][5].
Its stated reason: ingestion can elevate blood pressure and lead to cardiovascular problems ranging from shortness of breath and chest tightening to heart attack [1]. [1]A 2021 FDA toxicology memorandum reaffirmed there is no basis to consider 1,3-DMAA generally recognized as safe for use in food [3].
That conclusion covers all salt forms of DMAA, not only the base compound [3]. [3]The courts agreed. The 11th Circuit affirmed in 2019 that DMAA is not a dietary ingredient and is not generally recognized as safe [1].
The Supreme Court declined to review the case in 2020 [1]. [1]
Health Hazards
The FDA's mechanism statement is direct: DMAA narrows blood vessels and arteries [1].
That can raise blood pressure and lead to cardiovascular problems from shortness of breath and chest tightening through to heart attack, arrhythmias, seizures and other neurological effects [1]. [1]By 2013, DMAA-containing supplements had been linked to at least 86 reported illnesses [9][20].
At least 5 deaths were reported in association with them [20]. [20]Two US active-duty soldiers died of cardiac arrest after collapsing during physical exertion, with DMAA identified on toxicology [8].
One case involved a core body temperature at or above 105°F and rhabdomyolysis with a creatine kinase of 161,000 U/L [8]. The normal range is roughly 100–200 U/L. [8]A 21-year-old man with no typical cardiac risk factors went into cardiac arrest while exercising, after taking a DMAA-containing pre-workout supplement [6].
The specific product wasn't even on the FDA's list of known DMAA-containing products [6]. [6]A published case series documented three adults who suffered cerebral hemorrhage, including subarachnoid hemorrhage, after using DMAA-containing products [7][11]. [7]
Self-reported symptoms among users run to tachycardia, dizziness, tremors, palpitations, chest pain, headache, and numbness or tingling [10]. [10]
Less common reports include severe allergic reactions, and worsened psychotic-like symptoms such as hallucinations or mania [9].
People with a pre-existing condition such as bipolar disorder may be at higher risk of that second group [9]. [9]Two further single-case findings: secondary open-angle glaucoma in a young man, and acute liver injury [4].
The liver reports include a death associated with the product OxyElite Pro [4]. [4]Animal lethal-dose figures exist only for the intravenous route — an LD50 of 39 mg/kg in mice and 72.5 mg/kg in rats [4].
Injected animal data does not convert into an oral human threshold, and no source offers one. [4]The causal picture is disputed, and that disagreement is worth seeing rather than smoothing over.
A 2012 Department of Defense Safety Review Panel concluded the evidence did not conclusively establish that DMAA causes adverse medical events [4].
It still found a consistent signal that DMAA affects cardiovascular function like other sympathomimetic stimulants, and recommended continued prohibition on military installations [4]. [4]A 2017 systematic review identified only 16 eligible human studies — 8 retrospective case reports and 8 low-powered experiments [14].
It described the evidence base for DMAA's adverse effects as shallow, with cases often confounded by co-use of caffeine or other stimulants [14].
That paper questioned whether prohibition policies were fully evidence-based. Government sources and the case-report literature read the same accumulated reports as sufficient grounds for the ban [1][14]. [14]
Regulatory Timeline

Mid-to-late 2012 — Australia schedules it as a prohibited substance, a Swedish National Food Agency warning leads to a partial sales ban, and Brazil's ANVISA adds it to its prohibited list [4].
The UK's MHRA rules the DMAA product Jack3D an unlicensed medicine requiring removal, and New Zealand's Ministry of Health bans methylhexanamine sales [4]. [4]April 2013 — the FDA publicly warns consumers that DMAA-containing supplements are illegal and can be associated with heart attacks [1][5]. [1]
2013 — the FDA administratively detains OxyElite Pro and Jack3d, together estimated at over $8 million retail, after USPLabs initially refuses to comply voluntarily [1].
USPLabs ultimately destroys the detained product and agrees to stop manufacturing with DMAA [1]. [1]November 2013 — the FDA seizes more than $2 million of DMAA-adulterated supplements from Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals [1][5]. [1]
April 2017 — a federal district court rules the seized Hi-Tech products adulterated, and orders them condemned and forfeited for destruction [1].
The 11th Circuit affirms in 2019, the Supreme Court denies review in 2020, and the products are destroyed on November 12, 2020 [1]. [1]August 2021 — the FDA's most recent published toxicology review reaffirms no basis for GRAS status for 1,3-DMAA, all salt forms included [3]. [3]
Dangerous Amount
No scientifically established toxic dose exists for DMAA, because controlled human safety data are thin. What follows is what sources documented, not a threshold to work from.
A pharmacological review summarised expected single-oral-dose effects: roughly 4–15 mg on the lungs and nasal mucosa, about 50–75 mg on the heart, and about 100 mg on blood pressure [4].
DMAA has a long half-life, so repeated doses within 24–36 hours risk a cumulative buildup of stronger effects [4].
Most commercial DMAA-containing supplements were estimated to carry around 25 mg per serving [10].
In a small controlled study of 7 people, a single 25 mg oral dose produced essentially no blood pressure change [10]. At 50 mg the mean rise was about 7 mmHg, and at 75 mg about 16 mmHg [10].
People in published severe case reports are estimated to have taken far more — roughly 15 to 30 times a normal serving [10].
That works out to 375 mg or above, frequently taken alongside alcohol or other stimulants [10].
A New Zealand case report documented a 21-year-old man who developed cerebral hemorrhage after ingesting 556 mg, two 278 mg capsules, together with caffeine and alcohol [4].
Reported blood concentrations run roughly 10–100 µg/L in recreational use, above 100 µg/L in intoxicated patients, and above 300 µg/L in acute overdose [4]. [4]
Accidental Exposure
The best real-world data comes from Texas poison control centre records: 56 DMAA-related exposures across 2010–2011, 75% of them in 2011 alone [15].
80.4% involved the product OxyElite Pro [15].
Over half — 57.1% — were managed on-site rather than at a healthcare facility, and 80.4% were classified as expected to be not serious [15].
The most frequent clinical effects were tachycardia (28.6%), nausea (16.1%) and vomiting (12.5%) [15].
The most common interventions were dilution with fluids (41.1%), giving food (19.6%) and activated charcoal (14.3%) — conservative, largely at-home management [15].
Read that dataset carefully. Its own authors caution the reported effects may be attributable to other ingredients in the same products, such as caffeine, rather than to DMAA alone [15].
It is a triage snapshot rather than a controlled safety study, so the mild outcomes don't establish that DMAA itself is low-risk [15].
For a suspected overdose, WebMD's pharmacist-authored guidance is to get medical help right away — call 911, or a poison control centre on 800-222-1222 in the US [9].
The FDA advises anyone who believes a DMAA product harmed them to contact their health care practitioner [1]. It offers its Safety Reporting Portal, or the manufacturer named on the label, as channels to report the incident [1]. [15]
Common Questions
Can DMAA come from geranium oil, the way the labels claimed?
No reliable evidence supports it. The FDA states it is not aware of reliable science showing DMAA exists naturally in plants [1].
A cited study analysing geranium oil samples found no DMAA in them at all [4]. It concluded the DMAA in supplements was synthetic, despite 'geranium extract' on the label [4].
That wording is still in use. Some products list 'Pelargonium graveolens extract' or 'geranium extract' rather than any recognised chemical name [1].
What names does DMAA hide under on a label?
Per the FDA, it may appear as 1,3-DMAA, 1,3-Dimethylamylamine, 1,3-Dimethylpentylamine or Dimethylamylamine [1].
Also as 2-Amino-4-methylhexane, 4-Methyl-2-hexanamine, 4-Methyl-2-hexylamine, Methylhexanamine or Methylhexanenamine [1].
Geranamine was the supplement-market trademark, and Forthane the original pharmaceutical trade name [1][4]. 'Pelargonium graveolens extract' and 'geranium extract' may also signal its presence [1].
Is DMAE the same thing as DMAA?
No, and the near-identical abbreviations do real damage here.
DMAA (1,3-dimethylamylamine) is the stimulant this page is about, chemically related to amphetamines [19].
DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol) is a separate compound marketed for cognitive and mood support, and is not a stimulant in the same sense [19].
How is DMAA different from DMHA?
DMHA — dimethylhexylamine, also sold as octodrine — is a structurally related amine that got popular as a DMAA replacement after the ban [17].
The FDA reached the same conclusion about it: not a legitimate dietary ingredient, and an unsafe food additive [17]. It issued its own round of warning letters to DMHA marketers in 2019 [17].
Both act through similar sympathomimetic mechanisms and carry analogous cardiovascular concerns [4][17]. DMHA has even less controlled human dosing data behind it than DMAA does [17].
Would DMAA show up on a drug test?
In sport and in the military, yes, on panels that test for it.
DMAA, listed as methylhexaneamine, has been on the World Anti-Doping Agency's Prohibited List as a specified stimulant since 2010 [4][13].
It is also named on the US Department of Defense's Prohibited Dietary Supplement Ingredients list [12].
Whether a generic workplace drug panel would flag it is not something the sources reviewed here addressed.
Is it illegal to own DMAA, or only to sell it?
Those aren't the same question, and the answer here is weaker than we'd like.
A legal-explainer analysis says DMAA is not a DEA-scheduled controlled substance, so simple personal possession reportedly doesn't carry the criminal exposure that possessing a scheduled drug would [18].
Selling or marketing it as a dietary supplement is illegal, because the FDA regards it as an adulterating substance [18].
That is a general legal summary rather than official DEA or FDA guidance on possession. Read it as indicative, not definitive.
