Chaga is the sclerotium of Inonotus obliquus — the black, charcoal-like growth that forms almost exclusively on birch trees across the cold northern hemisphere [7].
It has been brewed as tea or tincture in Siberia, Russia and other northern European and Asian countries since at least the 16th century [2].
It is a fungus, not a nutrient. There is no daily requirement for chaga and no deficiency state [1].

Not a food in any everyday sense. Memorial Sloan Kettering notes chaga is technically an edible fungus but rarely eaten directly, because it is intensely bitter [3].
It grows on birch (Betula) trees across the circumboreal north — Siberia, Russia, northern Europe, Alaska, Canada and parts of Asia [7].
Alder, beech and poplar have occasionally been reported as hosts [11]. Tea brewed from the whole mushroom is how people actually consume it [3].
Best Time to Take
Nobody has studied this. WebMD, Memorial Sloan Kettering and Health Canada's guidance say nothing about time of day, and no clinical research was found on whether timing changes absorption [1].
The only related note is traditional. Soaking or simmering chaga in hot or cold water is believed to release its compounds into the liquid, which is a preparation claim rather than a clinical finding [8].

Does chaga contain caffeine?
No. Chaga tea and chaga coffee substitutes are naturally caffeine-free [13].
The appeal as a coffee alternative comes from the bitter, earthy taste, not from any stimulant content.
What does chaga taste like?
Bitter. It is usually grated to a powder and brewed into a drink that resembles Chinese herbal tea more than coffee or black tea [11].
That bitterness is why it is almost never eaten whole, and nearly always taken as tea, powder stirred into a drink, capsules or tincture [3].
Can I forage wild chaga safely?
Only with expert identification, and even then there is real risk. A government food-safety review notes chaga has been confused with Phellinus robineae, Phellinus tremulae and Daldinia grandis [2].
More often it is mistaken for corky bark disease, black knot or other tree galls [2].
Because the harvest is ground to powder before use, there is no way to check the identification afterwards — so go with a knowledgeable identifier, or leave it.
