Cesium is a soft alkali metal, element 55.

Its stable natural isotope, cesium-133, turns up in ordinary food and water in microgram amounts [7].

The supplement version is a different thing entirely: cesium chloride, sold as an alternative cancer therapy on a 1980s high pH theory that no controlled trial ever confirmed [10].

The FDA has told consumers and clinicians to avoid it. Its February 5, 2020 public health alert cites potentially fatal cardiac arrhythmias, hypokalemia, seizures, syncope and death [1].

There is no safe amount to report here, and nothing on this page is dosing guidance.

Why It's Banned

  • Cesium chloride counts as a new dietary ingredient — one not marketed in the US as a dietary ingredient before October 15, 1994 [3].

    That status requires a manufacturer either to show it was already in the food supply unaltered, or to notify the FDA 75 days before marketing with evidence of safety.

    No company has met either condition, so any supplement labeled as containing it is deemed adulterated under the law [3]. [3]

  • The paperwork violation is only half of it. The FDA separately concluded that cesium salts pose a genuine safety hazard, and issued a public health alert on February 5, 2020 [1]. [1]

  • Cesium chloride has been promoted as an alternative cancer therapy. The FDA states it has never been shown safe or effective for cancer, or for any other use [1]. [1]

Health Hazards

  • The core danger is cardiotoxicity. Cesium blocks the delayed rectifier potassium channels (I_Kr) on heart muscle cells, which prolongs the QT interval on an ECG [10].

    That creates the electrical substrate for early afterdepolarizations and life-threatening arrhythmias, most notably torsades de pointes [6]. [10]

  • Cesium also competes with potassium for those same channels and displaces it inside cells [10].

    The resulting hypokalemia, often alongside hypomagnesemia, worsens QT prolongation further [6]. [10]

  • The FDA's 2018 review of adverse events reported through June 30, 2018 identified 23 serious adverse event reports tied to cesium, with QT prolongation the most frequent finding [5].

    Six deaths were reported. The FDA considered two possibly attributable to cesium chloride, based on cardiac arrest or arrhythmia during or within 24 hours of use [5]. [5]

  • A 2026 systematic review covered 20 individual cases across 19 published articles [10].

    QT prolongation appeared in 60% of them, hypokalemia in 10 of 12 patients with a reported serum potassium (median 3.05 mmol/L), and 5 of the 20 patients died [11]. [10]

  • Reported effects span several organ systems [6].

    Cardiac: QT prolongation beyond 700 msec in some reports, monomorphic and polymorphic ventricular tachycardia, torsades de pointes, cardiac arrest. Neuromuscular: seizures, syncope, fatigue, muscle weakness, numb or tingling lips.

    Gastrointestinal: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. Reported QTc values have run roughly 546–735 msec, against a 500 msec high-risk threshold for torsades de pointes [6]. [6]

  • Corticosteroids deplete potassium too. Combining them with cesium is flagged as a specific risk, because the combined effect on serum potassium may be serious [14]. [14]

Regulatory Timeline

  • July 23, 2018 — the FDA alerted health care professionals that it was moving cesium chloride into the bulk drug substances category presenting significant safety risks in pharmacy compounding [5].

    The basis was its review of 23 serious adverse event reports through mid-2018.

  • September 2019 — Public Citizen and its Health Research Group filed a citizen petition asking the FDA to bar cesium chloride dietary supplements from the market [18]. [18]

  • February 5, 2020 — the FDA issued its public health alert, telling consumers and clinicians to avoid dietary supplements containing cesium salts [1].

    It followed a review of the CFSAN Adverse Event Reporting System (CAERS) database plus published studies and case reports, prompted by that petition [1]. [1]

  • October 9, 2020 — warning letters went to five companies marketing cesium-chloride-labeled supplements [2].

    American Nutriceuticals, Complete H2O Minerals, Daily Manufacturing, Elemental Research and The Mineral Store, and Essence-of-Life had 15 working days to correct the violations or face seizure or injunction [4]. [2]

  • February 22, 2023 — the date the FDA's dedicated cesium chloride page was last marked current [3].

    The agency says it will update that page if it takes further action. No later enforcement action appeared in the sources reviewed here. [3]

Dangerous Amount

There is no safe dose to report, and this is not guidance. Every dose level in the literature is attached to toxicity rather than to any benefit [6].

Clinical toxicology references put severe cardiac toxicity at daily intakes at or above roughly 6 g, with QTc prolongation at about 1–3 g/day over weeks of use [6].

Across case reports with documented dosing, median intake was 23.8 mmol of cesium ion per day — roughly 4 g/day of cesium chloride, matching reports of patients taking several grams daily [10].

For scale, ordinary background intake from food and water is about 10 micrograms a day [7].

Whole blood cesium normally sits below 10 µg/L. One fatal case measured 100,000 µg/L, ten thousand times the upper reference value [12]. [6]

Accidental Exposure

Anyone who has swallowed cesium chloride, by accident or as a self-administered therapy, should call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222 in the US) and get immediate medical evaluation [6].

Dangerous arrhythmias can develop without early warning signs.

Early signs: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, numb or tingling lips, fatigue, muscle weakness, low blood pressure, lightheadedness [6].

Serious ones: fainting, palpitations, seizures, QT prolongation, torsades de pointes and cardiac arrest — reported after both oral and injected cesium [6].

Emergency management centers on stopping intake, continuous cardiac monitoring, IV potassium repletion targeting a high-normal 4.5–5.0 mEq/L, and IV magnesium sulfate [6].

Cesium-induced hypokalemia can resist standard repletion. Amiloride, a potassium-sparing diuretic, worked as an adjunct in at least one published case [6].

Prussian blue binds cesium in the gut, cutting its biological half-life from about 110 days to roughly 30 [15]. Hemodialysis has been used in severe cases, since cesium is small enough to be dialyzable [6].

Effects linger. Patients are typically monitored until QTc stays below 500 msec with no arrhythmias for 24–48 hours, and FDA case reviews describe resolution taking weeks to as long as 2 years [5]. [6]

Common Questions

Is cesium still sold online as a supplement?

Unclear, honestly. In its February 2020 alert the FDA said it appeared few dietary supplements containing cesium salts were then on the market [1].

No more recent FDA assessment turned up in the sources reviewed here, so current online availability cannot be confirmed either way [1].

What should I do if I already bought a cesium product?

The FDA's guidance is to stop using it immediately [1].

If you or someone in your care had an adverse reaction while using it, get medical care, and report the event to the FDA through MedWatch or the Safety Reporting Portal [1].

Why was cesium marketed as a cancer therapy at all?

It traces to a high pH therapy idea from the researchers Sartori and Brewer in the early 1980s, which claimed alkalinizing tumor cells with cesium would stop them dividing [10].

No controlled clinical trial ever confirmed it.

The 2026 systematic review found the theory still driving use: 16 of 19 case-report articles cited high pH therapy or the original Sartori and Brewer papers as the sole justification [10].

Do the warnings cover all cesium salts or only the chloride?

All of them. The FDA's public health alert and warning letters explicitly cover cesium chloride or any other cesium salt [1].

Cesium chloride is simply the form most often encountered.

Is cesium radioactive?

The naturally occurring form is not. Cesium-133 is the only stable isotope found in nature, and it is what appears in food, water and cesium chloride products [7].

Cesium-134 and cesium-137 are man-made, produced by nuclear fission in reactor fuel or weapons detonations [8].

Those isotopes are a separate subject from the cesium salts that were sold as supplements.

Cesium or caesium — is there a difference?

Only the spelling. Both refer to element 55, symbol Cs [17].

Caesium is IUPAC's spelling and cesium is the common American variant, accepted by IUPAC as an alternate since 1993 [17].
