EFSA's acceptable daily intake covers every nitrate source combined: vegetables, drinking water, food additives and supplements [5].

An average 100 g serving of conventional fresh beetroot already accounts for about 20% of it, organic about 15% [4].

Most effective performance and blood-pressure doses sit well above the ADI, which is a genuine tension the sources do not resolve.

Beetroot is the swollen root of Beta vulgaris - the same vegetable North Americans call a beet [29].

As a supplement it is really a delivery vehicle for one compound: dietary nitrate. Mouth bacteria convert nitrate to nitrite, and the body converts that to nitric oxide, a vasodilator [1].

The Australian Institute of Sport files beetroot in its "very high" nitrate band, around 2,500 mg/kg fresh weight, alongside celery, lettuce, rocket and spinach [1].

It sells as juice shots, powders, capsules, tablets and gels. Nitrate content is not standardized across those forms or between brands, which is the central problem with buying it [1].

  • Endurance in recreational exercisersLikely helps

    A 2025 umbrella review found aerobic endurance improved significantly in non-athletes, standardized mean difference 0.26 (95% CI 0.16-0.37, p<0.001) [2].

    That is a small effect, consistently detected. It is the best-evidenced performance claim beetroot has [2]. [2]

  • Endurance in professional athletesPossibly helps

    The same 2025 umbrella review found no statistically significant endurance improvement in professional athletes, SMD 0.08 (95% CI -0.01 to 0.16, p=0.086) [2].

    The confidence interval still reaches as high as the effect seen in non-athletes, so read this as underpowered rather than as a clean null [2]. [2]

  • Blood pressureLikely helps

    A 2013 systematic review and meta-analysis of 16 RCTs (254 participants) found nitrate or beetroot juice lowered systolic blood pressure by 4.4 mmHg (95% CI -5.9 to -2.8, p<0.001) [6].

    Diastolic movement was smaller and not clearly significant at 1.1 mmHg (95% CI -2.2 to 0.1, p=0.06) [6]. [6]

  • Heart failure and COPDPossibly helps

    A small RCT in 20 heart-failure patients found exercise endurance improved 24% after one week of daily beetroot juice [8].

    A 12-week RCT in 81 COPD patients, against nitrate-depleted placebo juice, lowered blood pressure and added 30 metres to a 6-minute walk [9].

    WebMD's monograph nonetheless rates beet juice "possibly ineffective" for improving exercise capacity in COPD [7]. The two verdicts read as opposites, and may reflect a general capacity endpoint versus a specific walk-test one. [9]

  • Cognition and cerebral blood flowNot shown to help

    A pooled meta-analysis of 13 RCTs (297 participants) found no significant effect on cognitive function, SMD 0.06 (95% CI -0.06 to 0.18, p=0.32) [10].

    Across 9 RCTs (163 participants) it found no significant effect on resting cerebral blood flow either, SMD 0.14 (p=0.31) [10].

    A 13-week trial in 62 overweight and obese older adults across four nitrate-dose arms found nothing at any dose [12]. One earlier acute-dose RCT in 40 adults did improve a single task, serial-3s subtraction, with altered frontal-cortex blood flow [11]. [10]

  • Erectile dysfunctionPossibly helps

    No research has directly tested beet juice or beetroot supplements for erectile dysfunction [26].

    The mechanism is the same nitrate-to-nitric-oxide pathway with good blood-pressure evidence behind it, so the idea is a reasonable extension rather than a demonstrated one [26].

    One very small conference-abstract pilot of L-citrulline plus beetroot reported improved nighttime erections [27]. That was a combination product and has not been through full peer review as a completed study. [26]

Side Effects

  • Beeturia - pink urine, and it's harmless

    Red or pink urine and stools show up in 10-14% of the general population who eat enough beetroot, rising to as much as 45% in people with pernicious anemia [13].

    Betacyanin pigments survive to the colon instead of being broken down by stomach acid, then get absorbed [13].

    It is linked to iron-deficiency and high-iron-absorption states, and to eating oxalic-acid foods like spinach or rhubarb alongside [13]. It looks like blood and carries no health significance of its own. [13]

  • Stomach upset at concentrated doses

    Beetroot juice and concentrated supplements are documented to cause mild gastrointestinal discomfort, particularly in larger doses [1].

    Sports-nutrition guidance is to start low and rehearse with the product in training, rather than trying a large new dose the morning of an event [1]. [1]

Precautions

  • Oxalate and calcium-oxalate kidney stones

    Commercial beetroot juices measured 60.1-70.0 mg total oxalate per 100 mL, the highest of any fruit or vegetable juice tested besides rhubarb nectar [18].

    The raw root itself came in at 67 plus or minus 12 mg/100 g, falling to 52 plus or minus 14 mg/100 g after boiling [19]. Beet leaves run roughly 8 to 12 times higher in soluble oxalate than the root [17].

    The National Kidney Foundation lists beets among high-oxalate foods calcium-oxalate stone formers should limit, and suggests pairing them with dietary calcium at the same meal rather than cutting them out [15]. [18]

  • Nitrate drugs are not dietary nitrate

    Prescription organic nitrates for angina - nitroglycerin, isosorbide mono- and dinitrate - carry an absolute contraindication with PDE5 inhibitors such as sildenafil, tadalafil and vardenafil, risking severe or fatal hypotension.

    That contraindication is about those medications, not about dietary inorganic nitrate from beetroot [1].

    No source reviewed tested a beetroot supplement alongside a PDE5 inhibitor. Caution by mechanism-analogy is reasonable, but it is not documented evidence about beetroot. [1]

  • Already-low blood pressure

    No source reviewed gives dedicated clinical guidance for people whose blood pressure already runs low.

    What is documented is that nitrate lowers blood pressure even in people starting from normal readings, not only in hypertension [6].

    By that mechanism there is a plausible reason to watch for dizziness with concentrated products. This is extrapolation, not a studied recommendation for that group. [6]

  • Pregnancy

    Beetroot as ordinary food is not flagged as a pregnancy concern - vegetables supply roughly 80% of typical dietary nitrate intake anyway [1].

    For concentrated beetroot supplements and extracts, WebMD says there isn't enough reliable safety data and recommends staying at food-level amounts [7]. [7]

Interactions

  • Blood-pressure medication

    The concern is additive lowering rather than a blunted drug: beetroot lowers blood pressure by the same nitric-oxide route, so the two stack [6].

    WebMD separately flags a moderate interaction with CYP3A4-substrate medications and a minor one with CYP1A2 substrates [7].

    Against that, a systematic review of beetroot-juice hypertension RCTs found no adverse effects or adverse drug interactions reported among participants, medicated or not [1]. Theoretical mechanism and observed trial safety point different ways here. [7]

Food Sources

Beetroot is not uniquely high in nitrate. Several leafy greens match or beat it depending on which survey you read [1].

An Estonian nitrate survey measured dill at 2,936 mg/kg, spinach at 2,508, lettuce at 2,167 and beetroot at 1,446 [21].

Roughly 80% of adult dietary nitrate intake across the US, Europe and Australia comes from vegetables generally rather than beetroot specifically [1].

Average total intake runs about 1-2 mmol/day, or 60-120 mg [1]. A single 70 mL concentrate shot carries several times that.

Best Time to Take

Timing matters a lot for exercise and barely at all for blood pressure.

Plasma nitrite, the active intermediate, peaks about 2 to 2.5 hours after ingestion. So a single acute dose goes 2-3 hours before competition [1].

Sprint kayakers have used a documented loading protocol: one shot morning and evening for 3 days before the race, then two shots 2.5 h beforehand [1].

One habit undoes the whole thing. Antibacterial mouthwash markedly blunts the salivary bacteria that convert nitrate to nitrite, so keep it away from dosing [1].

Common Questions

Can I drink beet juice every day?

For most healthy people, moderate daily juice looks safe short term. A systematic review of beetroot-juice hypertension RCTs found no adverse effects or drug interactions reported across daily-dose trials [1].

The Australian Institute of Sport notes that chronic use of concentrated nitrate supplements has not been well studied [1].

EFSA supplies the other half: across all sources combined - vegetables, water, additives, supplements - people with medium-to-high intake can already exceed the adult ADI [5]. A single concentrated shot can use up most of a day's allowance on its own.

Does organic beetroot have more nitrate than conventional?

No, and the one peer-reviewed lab comparison found the opposite.

Conventional beetroot averaged 90 mg nitrate per 100 g fresh weight against organic's 54 mg, about 20% of the adult ADI per serving versus about 15% [4].

That matches the general vegetable pattern, where synthetic nitrogen fertilizer raises nitrate accumulation in the plant [4]. If maximizing nitrate is the actual goal, conventional may be marginally the better buy.

Raw or cooked beets for nitric oxide?

Raw beetroot and fresh juice retain the most nitrate.

A controlled cooking-methods study measured a 22-40% nitrate loss from boiling, with up to roughly half of a vegetable's nitrate leaching into the water [20].

That water is recoverable if you use it, in a soup for instance. Steaming keeps more nitrate than boiling does [20].

How should beetroot be stored?

Keep fresh beetroot whole and unpeeled in the fridge - don't cut it ahead of time [28].

Once cooked, move it to an airtight container in the fridge and use it within about 2 days [28].

It freezes as well, best cooked or steamed and cooled first, for up to about 3 months [28].
