Açaí is the fruit of Euterpe oleracea, a palm that grows in the Amazon floodplain.
Whole berries spoil within about a day of harvest, so almost nothing sold outside the region is fresh fruit [6].
What reaches the rest of the world is frozen pulp, freeze-dried powder, juice, or capsules and liquid extracts [2][6].
Nutritionally it is an odd fruit. Lipids make up roughly half the chemical profile of freeze-dried pulp, and a USDA-catalogued unsweetened purée lists 0 g of sugar per 100 g [3][5].
What the Evidence Actually Supports

NCCIH puts it bluntly: there is not enough reliable information to say whether açaí is helpful for any health-related purpose [1].
WebMD's clinical monograph lands in the same place, finding no good scientific evidence for athletic performance, cholesterol, erectile dysfunction, obesity, skin aging or metabolic syndrome [4].

This one has a real negative result behind it, not just missing evidence. A placebo-controlled trial of 69 people taking 200 g/day of açaí pulp alongside a calorie-restricted diet for 60 days found no additional weight loss beyond the diet [3].
NCCIH states that no peer-reviewed human study in the past several years substantiates açaí weight-loss claims [1].
The FTC has taken enforcement action against companies over deceptive açaí weight-loss marketing [1]. [1] - Cholesterol and blood glucosePossibly helps
An open-label pilot of 10 people taking 100 g of pulp twice daily for a month reported lower fasting glucose and insulin (p<0.02), plus lower total and LDL cholesterol [3].
The better-controlled trials did not reproduce that. Neither the 69-person placebo-controlled trial nor a 37-person metabolic-syndrome RCT found any change in lipid or glucose metabolism [3].

This is where the placebo-controlled trials did find something. The 12-week metabolic-syndrome RCT (325 mL twice daily, n=37) lowered IFN-γ and cut urinary 8-isoprostane by 31.2% (p=0.0099) [3].
The 60-day, 69-person trial likewise improved oxidative-stress and inflammatory markers [3].

One trial in athletes found an açaí beverage extended time to exhaustion during high-intensity treadmill running by a mean of 69 seconds (p=0.045) [3].

A randomized crossover trial of 30 people taking 100 mg/day of dry açaí extract reported reduced tinnitus discomfort on the THI scale (p=0.006), along with lower anxiety symptoms [3].

A single 500 mg açaí capsule lowered standing systolic blood pressure at 6 hours in healthy volunteers [3].

NCCIH lists aging skin among the things açaí is promoted for without enough reliable evidence behind any of them [1].
A 2023 critical review found only cell-culture work on wound repair, plus cosmetic applications such as sunscreen-formula UV performance [3].
No published human trial of oral açaí for skin outcomes turned up. Topical cosmetic use and swallowing a capsule are different questions [3]. [1]

Documented adverse effects are mostly gastrointestinal — bloating, diarrhea, flatus and nausea — plus headache and allergic reaction [2].

⚠ A drug reference's 1–3 g/day of powder and a trial's 200 g/day of whole pulp are not the same quantity of anything [2][3].
One is a concentrated dried product and the other is wet fruit pulp, so lining the two numbers up side by side is misleading [3]. [2]
Interactions
- Blood-sugar-lowering drugs
Davis's Drug Guide lists açaí as potentially raising the risk of hypoglycemia when combined with antidiabetic drugs [2].
Diabetes also appears on its list of conditions warranting caution with açaí supplements [2]. [2] - Blood-pressure medication
Combined with antihypertensives, açaí may add to their effect and raise the risk of hypotension, per Davis's Drug Guide [2].
That sits alongside the single-dose trial where 500 mg lowered standing systolic pressure at 6 hours [3]. [2] - Antiplatelets, anticoagulants and bleeding risk
Davis's Drug Guide lists increased bleeding risk when açaí is combined with antiplatelet drugs such as aspirin, or with anticoagulants [2].
The same reference flags ginkgo, garlic and ginger as supplement-side additions to that risk [2].
⚠ Two sources frame this differently. The drug reference describes an additive bleeding-risk effect, while a consumer health guide describes açaí as potentially lowering blood thinners' efficacy [2][6]. [2]
Food Sources
Açaí is the food here, so this is what is in it rather than what supplies it.
Per 100 g, a USDA-catalogued unsweetened purée gives 70 kcal, 1.75 g protein, 5.26 g fat and 5.26 g carbohydrate [5].
Of that fat, 0.88 g is saturated and 4.39 g polyunsaturated. The same 100 g carries 5.3 g fibre and 0 g total sugar [5].
Minerals per 100 g: 35 mg calcium, 0.63 mg iron, 105 mg potassium, 26 mg sodium [5]. Vitamin C is negligible, which surprises people who expect a berry to supply it [5].
Compare dragon fruit, its usual smoothie-bowl rival. Per 100 g, USDA lists 68 kcal, 0.68 g protein, 0.21 g fat and 16.24 g carbohydrate [7].
Dragon fruit also carries 1.8 g fibre, 12 g sugar and 19.8 mg vitamin C per 100 g [7].
The two are not the same kind of fruit at all. Açaí leans fat, fibre and near-zero sugar; dragon fruit leans sugar and vitamin C [5][7].
Freeze-dried pulp is denser in both calories and lipid than the diluted purée, since removing water concentrates the fruit's naturally high oil content [3].
Best Time to Take
Nobody has tested this. No clinical, government or academic source reviewed here recommends a time of day, and the drug reference does not specify timing relative to meals for any form [2].
In the published human trials, people took pulp or beverages with meals or as a standalone drink [3].
None of the trials compared fasted against fed, or morning against evening [3].
Given how often açaí supplements are marketed with a specific best time, this is worth naming as a genuine gap rather than an answer.
Common Questions
Is it fine to eat an açaí bowl every day?
No study says daily açaí is unsafe, and none says it is safe either. NCCIH notes pulp has only been studied for up to 3 months in clinical research [1].
The bigger daily issue is usually the bowl, not the berry. A hospital-published guide estimates an average commercial açaí bowl carries 21–62 g of sugar per serving [9].
Most of that comes from sweetened bases, fruit toppings and add-ins like honey or granola, not from the açaí [9].
WHO's ceiling of about 10% of energy from sugar works out to roughly 45 g/day on an 1,800 kcal diet, so one heavily topped bowl can use most of it [9].
Does processing or storage cut açaí's antioxidant content?
Heat is less of a problem than people assume. A kinetic study of açaí pulp anthocyanins found relatively high thermal stability across the pasteurization range of 60–90°C, with a low activation energy for degradation [12].
Storage is where the losses happen. A food-science study tracked spray-dried açaí powder over 120 days and found two degradation phases, faster in the first 45–60 days and slower after [8].
Higher storage temperature and higher moisture both sped up the loss, and the carrier agent used during drying changed how well pigment survived [8].
Freeze-drying is generally described in the peer-reviewed literature as a way of preserving bioactive compounds during transport and storage, though it is not loss-free [3].
A medically reviewed consumer guide simply says check the product's expiration date and store açaí supplements somewhere cool and dry [6].
What is the difference between an açaí bowl and açaí juice?
A bowl is frozen purée blended with water or milk into a thick base, then topped with fruit, granola or other add-ins and eaten with a spoon [6].
Juice is puréed berries made drinkable, sometimes blended with other fruit juices [6].
Nutritionally, bowls usually carry more calories and sugar because of the toppings. Juice depends entirely on whether it is pure purée or a diluted, sweetened blend [6].
Can açaí trigger a reaction in people with pollen allergies?
Possibly, and the sources do not fully agree on how to categorize it.
Davis's Drug Guide contraindicates açaí for anyone allergic to palm or pollen-related plants in the Arecaceae family [2]. A university women's health research institute similarly cautions that people with pollen or tree allergies could react to an allergen in açaí berry [10].
⚠ The AAAAI's oral-allergy-syndrome reference describes cross-reactivity mainly for birch, grass and ragweed pollen with particular fruit and vegetable families [11].
It does not list palm or Arecaceae as a typical trigger family, so this is a documented but less-characterized concern rather than a textbook oral allergy syndrome case [11].
Anyone with a known tree or palm pollen allergy should be careful here [2][10].
Is unpasteurized açaí juice actually dangerous?
Yes, in one specific and well-documented way. Raw açaí juice or pulp in the Brazilian Amazon has repeatedly caused outbreaks of acute Chagas disease, a parasitic infection normally carried by triatomine bugs [13].
A CDC-published investigation of an 11-case outbreak in Barcarena, Brazil in 2006 statistically implicated açaí juice as the source [13].
A later CDC-published study went further, laboratory-confirming the same Trypanosoma cruzi strain in a batch of juice and in the blood of the 10 patients who drank it [14].
NCCIH and a medically reviewed consumer guide flag the same risk for raw juice [1][6]. It attaches to unpasteurized product handled in endemic Amazon regions, not to commercially pasteurized, frozen or freeze-dried açaí [1].
